Red Flag Warning in Effect for Marin County

Warning to remain in place until Wednesday Morning

Marin County, CA -- The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the North Bay Mountains and other parts of the Bay Area above 1000 feet, which is in effect from 9 PM Monday Evening to 5 AM Wednesday.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected during this time frame with a combination of strong off shore winds with gusts to 30-35 miles per hour and low relative humidity percentage ranging from teens to the low twenties.

The affected area includes higher terrain areas of Marin, Napa, Sonoma and East Bay counties. 

The concerns of this weather system are that fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

Kentfield and Greenbrae Residents:

We have all been witness to the devastation experienced over the past two weeks in Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Mendocino, and Lake Counties from a series of devastating wildfires.  Many of us have been touched by these fires in a personal way.  The men and women of the Kentfield Fire Protection District wish to express our deepest condolences to all of the people affected by the North Bay fires. Our hearts are with you all. 

Cities and towns in Marin are not immune from wildfire.  Our commitment to wildfire preparedness and to ensuring the protection of cities and fire districts within Marin County has never been stronger.  Our members are dedicated to ensuring our community is safe and well protected from any threat, particularly the threat of a wildfire.  We must continue to work together to ensure we are all making our community’s safety our highest, shared priority.  Our success is dependent upon our partnership with you.  We are committed to this goal.

Fire agencies across Marin County have sent 38 fire engines and 154 firefighters to the fires in
Sonoma, Napa, and Mendocino counties. Firefighters and command personnel are actively
engaged in fighting the large fires affecting those communities, protecting homes, and in
rescuing people in the path of the fire.

We will remain committed to actively supporting firefighting operations in the affected counties.
All of Marin’s Fire Chiefs have taken the necessary steps to ensure that we have adequate
staffing in each of our communities to respond to any emergency that occurs in Marin County.
Firefighters are working long hours on duty and on the fire lines across Northern California and
many agencies have added additional staffing on duty.

There are currently no large fires in Marin and no large fires threatening Marin County. The
vegetation fire on Highway 37 at Lakeville Highway has burned more than 1,500 acres. The
aggressive actions of Marin firefighters contained this fire. The fire no longer poses a threat to
Marin County.

Although there are no large fires in Marin County, no fires threatening Marin County, and no
evacuation orders anticipated we encourage you and your family to ensure that you have
defensible space surrounding your home and that you have a plan in the event you ever had to
evacuate your home. The following websites provide valuable information on these topics:

Kentfield Fire Protection District recently received a Class 1 Excellent Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC).  Class 1 represents an exemplary fire suppression program.

ISO’s Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS), evaluates four primary categories of fire suppression — fire department, emergency communications, water supply, and community risk reduction. The FSRS includes standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The Public Protection Classification (PPC™) program recognizes the efforts of communities to provide fire protection services for citizens and property owners. A community’s investment in fire mitigation is a proven and reliable predicator of future fire losses.

Insurance companies use PPC information to help establish fair premiums for fire insurance — generally offering lower premiums in communities with better protection. By offering economic benefits for communities that invest in their firefighting services, the program provides an additional incentive for improving and maintaining public fire protection.

The program also provides help for fire departments and other public officials as they plan, budget for, and justify improvements. The most significant benefit of the PPC program is its effect on losses. Statistical data on insurance losses bears out the relationship between excellent fire protection — as measured by the PPC program and low fire losses. PPC helps communities prepare to fight fires effectively.  

Defensible space is your property’s front line defense against wildfire.  Creating and maintaining defensible space around your home can dramatically increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire and improves the safety of firefighters defending your property.  100 feet of defensible space is required by law.*

Sand and sand bags are now available for Kentfield District residents at the College of Marin Parking Lot #15 on Kent Avenue (between College & Hillside).  The driveway is located between 139 and 145 Kent Avenue.  There should be two shovels and a bin with sand bags in the back of the lot.

In 2015, CAL FIRE awarded FIRESafe MARIN a $123,200 grant from the SRA Fire Prevention Fee Fund to update the 2005 Marin County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).  The plan was completed and published in September 2016.  See attached flyer for more information.

Twelve firefighters graduated from the Marin County Regional Fire Academy on June 17, 2016. The 10-week Marin County Regional Fire Academy was a fast-paced, intense and highly disciplined program based on Marin County Fire Agencies’ Standard Operating Guidelines, and the California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I curriculum. The Recruit received the technical and manipulative instruction which is needed to operate at a Firefighter I level. The training was designed to develop the Recruit's ability to function under stress and perform as an effective team member of a fire company. The firefighters also participated in daily physical fitness exercises to develop the necessary and requisite strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. Graduates will move into positions with Kentfield Fire District, Marin County Fire Department, Mill Valley Fire Department, Southern Marin Fire District and Tiburon Fire District.

Director Steve Gerbsman administers the Oath of Office as Board Directors Bruce Corbet, Barry Evergettis, and Michael Murray are sworn into the Kentfield Fire District Board of Directors at the November 18 Board of Directors meeting.  Directors Corbet and Murray will serve a four year term; Director Evergettis will serve a two year term replacing Director McLeran's seat as he moved out of the District with two years remaining on his term.  

The County of Marin is holding a workshop for the rehabilitation of Sir Francis Drake Blvd between Highway 101 and the Ross Town Limits and is requesting resident input.  The public workshop is scheduled for:
